White privilege
On 10 November 2007 Christi van der Westhuizen wrote an article in the Weekend Argus in which she accused whites of being “extremely resistant to owning up to their privileged status and how it came to be.” Whites are also guilty of benefiting from a race-based system and then claiming that they did not to know about the effects of that system on blacks. They complain “constantly about the employment equity laws which have the sole function to redress apartheid.” Their attitudes legitimise “continuing white privilege and the lack of any meaningful redistribution”. They are full of greed for power and wealth - and this “very same greed fuels white denial and consequently blocks efforts to defuse our socio-economic time bomb.” |

No changes to the provinces without provincial referendums
THE future of the provinces is one of the main issues that will be discussed at the ANC’s forthcoming Policy Conference in June and at its national conference in December. The ANC has published a policy discussion document that is highly critical of the present provincial system. It points to the failure of some provinces to deliver key services; their failure to support dysfunctional municipalities and the expense and duplication that they entail. The discussion document poses three alternatives: that the present system is maintained; that provinces are abolished altogether; or that the number of provinces be reduced |

The Strategy and Tactics for Reforming the Judiciary
The ANC has published a discussion document which has the title “Transformation of the Judicial System.” In it, transformation of the judiciary is described as a challenge. This challenge is identified as comprising three main components: Firstly, the creation of an effective and efficient judicial system which is “responsive to the needs and aspirations of all South Africans”; secondly, the creation of a judiciary which operates within a system of separation of powers with appropriate checks and balances; thirdly, the creation of a legitimate judicial system which is gender and race sensitive and “responsive to the needs and aspirations of all South Africans”. |

Ermelo High School case puts focus on school dilemma
THE tussle over the language policy at Ermelo High School is one of the most significant legal wrangles since 1994. It is likely to impact on three key areas of society: the powers of SGBs; the future of single-medium Afrikaans schools; and most seriously, the impartiality of the judiciary. |

The Draft Education Laws Amendment Bill: Excellence or Mediocrity in Education?
The Minister of Education deserves congratulations on her candid acknowledgement during her budget speech last week of shortcomings within the Department of Education and on her commitment to strive for excellence in all spheres of education. Her positive approach to celebrating and expanding areas of success and denouncing mediocrity and under-performance augurs well for the future, particularly since that attitude permeated her entire speech. |
