The FW de Klerk Foundation is committed to upholding the national accord that was negotiated between 1990 and 1996 by political parties representing substantial majorities from all South Africa’s communities.

This national accord, as embodied in the 1996 Constitution and Bill of Rights, is the foundation of the New South Africa. It makes provision for

  • equality and non-discrimination - including measures to ensure the promotion of equality and to prohibit, racial, cultural and gender discrimination;
  • a genuine democracy including free elections; the division of powers; and the independence of the judiciary;
  • property rights - including the assurance that no one may be arbitrarily deprived of property;
  • cultural rights - including the right to mother-tongue education and the right to participate in the cultural life of one’s choice; and
  • language rights - including the requirement that all South Africa’s official languages must enjoy parity of esteem.

The Foundation believes that South Africa’s future success will depend directly on our ability to uphold the national accord and the rights and values articulated in the 1996 Constitution.
